The studio was invited by ESADSE (École Supérieure d’Art et Design de Saint Étienne) to hold a three month course during which the New
Memory workshop took place. The result of the workshop was an installation entitled 'Totem' which was presented during the Saint Étienne
International Design Biennial 2008.
'Totem' is a composition of old-used furniture that were transformed utilising unrelated materials
while following a common concept; each piece has been re-thought not so much based on its’
functionality but more on its’ history and inbuilt philosophy. The memory of each object has been
the basis of inspiration while the use of contemporary materials underlines certain formal
characteristics converting them to symbolic elements.
The installation represents a symbol for the tourism of the area, and the city of Saint Etienne in
particular, which has invested considerably on design. It is also an attempt to create awareness
towards an ever consuming society placing emphasis on issues of sustainability and real design
values.
